Media Evaluation Q 1

WRITTEN Evaluation Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When looking at the finished trailer I can see it follows the forms and conventions of a real trailer and challenges the paradigms to small extent. In regards to sound, our movie trailer follows the forms and conventions as non-diegetic sinister and fast beat music have been used to emphasise the mood. Just as an official trailer would do, we have used the fast beat music at the end of the trailer to symbolise the end of the trailer equilibrium, where a commotion has broken out, and the characters are distressed, this fast beat conveys the panic and symbolise the fast beat of their hearts as they are scared. At the beginning of the trailer is slower, more menacing, music this hints to the audience that bad events are to follow. In addition to this our trailer has applied the forms and conventions of a real horror trailer as we have used the structure of changing equilibrium. This is where the start of the trailer is normal and calm, so start of the equilibrium. This then changes to a moment of disequilibrium as the trailer progresses, followed by a period of disequilibrium where chaos within the trailer is shown, this is the scene with the most frenzy. This process was introduced in Todorov’s theory of narrative. Our trailer additionally follows forms and conventions as we have used fast cuts and hand held cameras to convey the panic within the last shots of the trailer, one trailer in particular that uses this technique is the trailer of “2007 Halloween” in the end cuts where the victims are trying to escape the killer. As well as this we used high angle shots to suggest vulnerability and iconic use of a necklace which suggests the murderer or the victim could have been wearing, Therefore does not directly give away who the face of the murderer is but leaves it to the audience to guess.  Our trailer breaks the forms and conventions of a real horror trailer to a small extent as the paradigms of horror are not followed when regarding feminism. This is because in most horrors, females are portrayed in a typical way, them being vulnerable, weak and dependent on a male figure, with the main killer additionally being male. Our trailer breaks this theory by basing our story line on females alone, each with different personalities and one being the killer. By doing this we have put female characters in a new light of being strong and capable to have the power to kill.

When making my Empire film magazine, I followed most forms and conventions as if it was a real media product. I followed them by placing my Masthead at the top of the magazine, in the colour red. The majority of magazines use a red masthead so I applied this rule but personalised it with dripping blood so that the red was symbolic and more sinister. As well as this my magazine follows forms and conventions as I have positioned my cover lines down the left side of the magazine, positioning them so that they follow the outline of the main cover image of the characters face. The shot I have used for my front cover is a close up of one of the victims. I followed this convention of using a close up so that it was more personal to the audience and that they sense her fear. This character has a bruised eye and blood dipping down her face which suggests to the audience she has been involved in a physical struggle, this helps show a clear link to the horror genre as the audience can see she has been harmed by somebody and has eyes wide with fear. In addition to following magazine forms and conventions I have used a variation of font that isn’t plain. As well as this I have used the red of the blood on her forehead and played it into the colour scheme of the fonts so that the writing is of the same colour of blood.

I followed the forms and conventions of film posters in my poster for my trailer, as I have ensured that the main image takes up most of the page just as real film posters do. As well as this I have placed the film title at the bottom of the page with the credits of the production team beneath. In addition to this I have followed the forms and conventions as I have put rating stars with a quoted comment on my poster, showing it has received positive views from the audience. Furthermore I have followed forms and conventions as I have used a black background with no vibrant or bright colours to add to the gloomy + scary vibe of the poster, and to hint to the audience that it is not a cheerful film. I made sure to show the weapon that the killer uses with blood dripping combined with the iconic necklace that is worn by one of the girls.
